TRAVEL INFO
What entry documents do I need to enter Belize?
A valid passport and return ticket are required for entry into Belize. Most visitors, including U.S. citizens, do not need a visa. Visitors can stay up to 30 days, with extensions available through the Immigration and Nationality Department.
What is the accepted form of currency?
U.S. dollars are widely accepted throughout Belize. 1 USD = 2 BZD, a fixed exchange rate. Credit cards (Visa and MasterCard) are accepted in most locations; small businesses may prefer cash. ATMs are available in Placencia.
How do I get from the airport to the resort?
All international guests arrive at Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) in Belize City. From there, guests can travel to Placencia by air or ground transfer.
Local Flights: Airfare between Belize International (BZE) and Placencia is included in the Castaways Travel room rate. The flight takes approx. 25 minutes and from Palencia Airstrip complimentary pickup is provided to the resort.
What is the weather like in Belize?
More than likely you will enjoy gorgeous sunny days with an average year-round temperature of 75-80°F the entire time you’re here (trust us, you’re going to love it—the weather is near perfect)! The Caribbean Sea water temperature also stays around 80°F throughout the year.
And yes, Belize does have a hurricane season—June through mid-November and historically, most hurricanes have occurred between August and October in Belize.
Never fear though, there is a cooperative early warning network and other procedures that have proven to be effective. So, on the rare chance a hurricane does head your way, plans are in place to keep you safe.
What is Belize's time zone
Belize is on Central Standard Time (CST). There are no adjustments for Daylight Savings Time. That means that during the summer months, Belize follows Mountain Daylight Time (MDT).
Is the water safe to drink?
Yes, it is – and it tastes good! You can actually drink it right out of the tap. The resort’s tap water comes from a deep artesian well on the mainland in Big Creek and is treated by the municipal water system. A relatively new PVC pipe system delivers fresh water to commercial and household users throughout Placencia Village and it’s generally recognized as safe to drink.
Should I bring an electrical adapter?
Belize uses 110 volts. If you’re coming from the U.S. or Canada, you can plug in your devices directly. If you’re coming from Europe or elsewhere, you’ll need a Type A/B adapter and a voltage converter if your device isn’t dual-voltage (check the label for “110–240 V”).

Is it safe to explore outside of the resort?
Yes, one of the reasons we love Placencia is because of the safety and stability of Belize and the Placencia Peninsula.
There are always risks when traveling – no matter the location. It’s always recommend using common sense safety precautions:
- Don’t bring large amounts of cash or unnecessary valuables.
- Keep your doors locked.
- Put your valuables in the in-room safe provided.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
The one area to avoid is the south side of Belize City – this area accounts for the majority of reported crimes across the country. It is not a tourist area anyway, so you won’t have reason to venture out there!
Can I rent a car or golf cart? Do I need a car in Placencia?
The resort offers complimentary ground transfer to locations on the Peninsula.
Golf carts are a very popular way to get around the peninsula. You can arrange a rental yourself through the resort’s partner Captain Jak’s – or the resort is happy to take care of that for you. Choose from 4-seat or 6-seat carts, available by the hour, day, or week.
From Sirenian Bay, it’s about a 30-minute cart ride to the village or a 10-minute cart ride to Maya Beach. And unless you have plans to drive further around Belize by yourself, we recommend a cart over a car. The cart is a nice addition to your stay so you can easily make trips to the grocery store or to Maya Beach.
Is Zika a concern in Belize?
While Zika is not considered a big threat right now in Belize, local mosquito transmission of Zika virus infection (Zika) has been reported in the country. We recommend carefully and consistently applying a mosquito spray containing DEET, especially during “high-risk” times (after a rain, at dusk and dawn and while in the jungle). You can find the Center for Disease Control’s most recent recommendations and warnings regarding Zika in Belize here.
You’re most likely to be bothered by bugs at dusk, dawn or when the weather is extremely calm. And if you’re near the lagoon or the mangroves, you’re more likely to notice them.
Sirenian Bay rakes the beach daily, which helps prevent sand flies, sand fleas and no-see-ums. A great repellent to use is Avon’s Skin So Soft – it’s more difficult for them to bite through it. DEET has no effect because they aren’t insects, but rather tiny crustaceans. They are more active after a rain or in cooler weather. Although a nuisance because they’re itchy, bites aren’t typically serious or life threatening.
It’s common to also see small, non-biting ants (make sure you put food away or they will find it), geckos (which are harmless and help out by eating bugs and spiders) and occasional scorpions (check shoes or dark spaces carefully).
Do I need shots or vaccines before I travel?
No shots or vaccines are required to enter the country. If you plan to spend a considerable amount of time in the jungle, it’s recommended to check with your health provider before you travel.
What languages are spoken in Belize?
English is the official language, but you’ll also find Belizeans speaking Spanish, Creole, Mayan, Garifuna, and even German.
Is tipping in Belize common and how much should I tip?
Generally, the average tip at restaurants in Belize is about 10%. However, some locations add an extra 8.5% “service fee” charge to your meal or stay so be sure to check your bill before adding on an additional tip. And it’s always appreciated when you tip your tour guides for a job well done or for any extra service.
Sirenian Bay adds at 10% service charge to each reservation. 100% of this service charge is distributed to the resort staff. If you’d like to leave an additional gratuity for any individual or team, you may do so at check out via cash or card. If you’d like to learn more, check out this blog tipping in Belize.
RESORT INFO
What time is check-in and check-out?
For your convenience, check-in begins at 3 PM, and check-out is by 11 AM.
Is a deposit required at check-in?
A refundable deposit is required at check-in to cover any incidental charges or room damages. Please be advised that your card is NOT charged at check-in, but a hold is placed. Usually, a hold will be released within 24 – 48 hours of checking out. In some cases it can take 7 – 10 working days to reflect in your account.
How many rooms are at Sirenian Bay Resort?
25 luxury villas.
Is the resort handicap accessible?
Yes. Sirenian Bay Resort offers select handicap-accessible bungalows designed for guests with mobility needs. These ground-level units include accessible bathrooms and easy access to resort amenities such as the pool, restaurant, and common areas. While most facilities are wheelchair friendly, the resort does not have elevators, so upper-level rooms may not be suitable for guests with limited mobility. We recommend mentioning any accessibility requirements when booking with Castaways Travel so the resort can ensure the best available accommodation.
Is trip protection available?
We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect the value of your vacation. Unforeseen events such as flight delays or cancellations, medical issues, accidents, injury, death, family emergencies, job loss, or even illness before sailing can cause you to miss or cut short your cruise. Travel protection insurance can help cover these unexpected situations.
Coverage ranges from standard cancellation and medical protection to more flexible options, including “cancel for any reason” plans. Costs vary depending on your state of residence, date of birth, and level of coverage selected.
For U.S. residents, Castaways Travel offers policies through Allianz Insurance. If you live outside the U.S., please secure coverage locally. Do not take a chance on missing your well-earned vacation—travel insurance provides peace of mind when you need it most. Ask your Castaways Travel Advisor for a quote and an explanation of available plans or send us a email request for an insurance quote, or call (281) 465-4960.
Does the resort provide transportation?
Yes, complimentary ground transfer to locations on the Peninsula, this includes trips into Placencia Village or to restaurants on the Peninsula.
Trips to Placencia are on call and complimentary in the resort’s van, bus or 4-wheelers
Which excursions or day trips should we take while we’re in Placencia?
Belize is rich with adventure, which is one of the things we love about it! However, when you’re visiting for a short time, all the options can feel a bit overwhelming. Visit this blog post for our suggestions on how many tours to book during your stay.
We recommend Captain Jak’s for all local tours, and they have descriptions of the most popular tours on their website. If you’d like to have things arranged before you arrive, the resort can book most of the excursions for you!
Your butler is also available to assist in answering questions, booking excursions, or arranging transport.
Tell me more about the beach… is there sea grass? Is it swimmable?
Yes, there is a gorgeous, swimmable beach at Sirenian Bay, which is raked daily to keep it soft and clean. Belize has the second biggest barrier reef in the world, and part of that habitat includes sea grass which helps sustain all of the tropical wildlife. Some sea grass may end up on the beach, but the resort takes care of clearing it for you. At certain times of the year, the sargassum comes in heavily – and while it’s not beautiful, it’s unlikely to hinder your vacation plans!
When does low season begin and is everything closed during that time?
If you’re concerned about low season, September and October are the “worst” times to come because that’s when you’re most likely to encounter closed businesses… and it will be the hottest/wettest/buggy-est time of the year. But again, plenty of people still visit during those months and have a great time.
